The administrator of the Mutitjulu Community Aboriginal Corporation (MCAC) has handed the corporation back to its members at a meeting in the community yesterday. The hand-over was official from midnight last night.
The administrator, Mr Brian McMaster of KordaMentha, gave a detailed report to the more than 35 members who attended the meeting, many of them senior traditional land owners.
The meeting was also attended by the Registrar of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporations, Ms Laura Beacroft—an independent statutory officer who was responsible for appointing the administrator.
Both the corporation members and directors, and Ms Beacroft were very pleased with the progress made during the meeting.
Ms Beacroft confirmed that no illegality had been discovered in the course of the administrator’s work over the past year with the corporation. The corporation is compliant with reporting to her office at the moment.
‘I am pleased the corporation is going to work over the next few months with us on some improvements that will strengthen corporate governance processes and protect members’, she said.
‘It was a very constructive day and I wish the corporation well.’
The members expressed appreciation for the progress made during the past year but said they were now ready to take on management of the corporation themselves.
Chairman of the corporation Mr Sammy Wilson said, ‘We are pleased that the administrator and the Registrar have confirmed what we always knew to be true— that there was no misconduct by the Mutitjulu Community Aboriginal Corporation board, members and staff.’
