ORIC offers training in corporate governance for Indigenous corporations and their directors. Two of these training programs are the three-day Introductory Corporate Governance Workshops and the Certificate IV in Business (Governance). Details of these programs are listed below.
A step up from the information sessions are the highly interactive
three-day Introductory Corporate Governance Workshops offered by ORIC. These
workshops are targeted at highest need sites and groups. Entry is by
application, and participants sign joint learning agreements. Upon
completing the workshop, participants are encouraged to continue with accredited training, including
the Certificate IV in Business (Governance) and the Diploma in
Business (Governance). ORIC’s Queensland pilot of workshops resulted in: ORIC has maintained training in Queensland, expanded it to the Northern
Territory and Western Australia, and offers workshops in other states. Certificate IV in Business (Governance) is a nationally recognised
training package developed specifically for Indigenous people who wish to
attain recognised skills in corporate governance and management. It is a
competency-based training program that requires participants to demonstrate
their competence in a range of skills relevant to corporate governance. The Certificate IV package includes 32 competencies, of which 13 must be
completed for a Certificate IV. Following that, another 13 must be completed
at a higher level for a Diploma of Business (Governance). The Certificate IV must be delivered by a registered training
organisation. In line with Commonwealth procurement
guidelines and policies, ORIC selected a panel of registered training
organisations. Of these, we have contracts to deliver accredited training
with: The certificate course being delivered by Tropical North Queensland
Institute of TAFE in Queensland and the Torres Strait covers the following 13 competencies in four one‑week
blocks over a period of several months: Maningrida Jobs Education and Training Centre has been engaged to provide
three modules of the Certificate IV course in Maningrida and began delivery of the
training in February 2004. The modules are: Options for offering the Diploma in Business (Governance) are also being
